2014 - New York

The Moreau family had returned to New York for a reason entirely different from the memories the city once held for Gabriel and Eleah. They weren't here to reminisce about their first meeting, their countless dates, or the years they had spent falling in love. This time, they were here because Eleah needed the best care they could find.

The cold walls and familiar hospital scent had gradually become something neither Gabriel nor Eleah thought much about anymore. After months of appointments, examinations, and exhausting cycles of chemotherapy, the corridors of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center had become an unwelcome but familiar part of their lives.

On that afternoon, Eleah lay quietly in her hospital bed, her hand held tightly between Gabriel's. He hadn't let go for hours.

After another long cycle of chemotherapy, Eleah had finally made her decision. She wanted to stop. At first, Gabriel couldn't accept it. He had spent months convincing himself that there had to be another treatment, another doctor, another possibility. Anything that could keep her with him a little longer.

But Eleah didn't want to spend whatever time she had left being defined by hospitals. She was tired. Not simply tired from lack of sleep, but tired in a way that reached her bones. The chemotherapy had taken away days she could never get back, days spent nauseous, exhausted, and too weak to do the things she wanted to do.

She wanted to go home. She wanted to wake up beside her husband. She wanted to hear her daughter's voice in the morning. She wanted to sit at the dinner table, watch movies together, complain about insignificant things, laugh at stupid jokes, and fall asleep in her own bed. She wanted to live whatever time remained without constantly feeling like she was fighting for the next hospital appointment.

And eventually, Gabriel understood. It wasn't giving up. It was Eleah choosing how she wanted to spend her life.

That afternoon, after another conversation with her medical team, her doctor respected her decision and arranged for her discharge. When they finally left the hospital, Gabriel stayed close beside her, one hand lingering gently around her waist as they made their way home. For the first time in what felt like forever, there was no hospital corridor ahead of them. There was only home.

When they stepped through the apartment door, Eleah took a slow breath. She looked around at the familiar living room, the photographs on the shelves, the little traces of their life together scattered throughout the apartment. A tired but genuine smile appeared on her face.

“Home sweet home.”

Before Gabriel could even answer, hurried footsteps came from the hallway.

“Mommy!” Becca came running toward her. Eleah barely had time to open her arms before her daughter threw herself into them, hugging her tightly. “Finally, you're home!” Becca exclaimed. “I miss sleeping with you in my room!” Eleah laughed softly, wrapping her arms around her daughter. “I miss you too, sweetheart.” She gently ran her fingers through Becca's hair, smoothing it back from her face. Then she glanced at Gabriel. “How about we all sleep together tonight?” Becca's eyes immediately lit up. “YES! YES! YES!” Her excitement filled the room. Gabriel stood quietly beside them, watching his wife and daughter.

Finally, just the three of them, standing together in their home. And somehow, that was all Eleah had wanted.

The old routine had finally returned. The comforting scent of Earl Grey tea in the mornings, Becca’s little sulks whenever she had to leave her mother for school with her dad, the familiar clinking of cutlery around the dining table every evening, picking up a book to read with Becca, sharing quiet afternoons at home, watching movies together, and falling asleep peacefully in Gabriel’s arms at the end of each day.

To Eleah, it felt like the best cure she could ever have. The pain from her illness was still there, lingering beneath the surface, but with her husband and daughter beside her, somehow, it felt like nothing.

Until one morning, when Gabriel returned home after dropping Becca off at school, he found the apartment eerily quiet. “Honey?” He called for Eleah as he stepped inside, but there was no answer. A sudden, terrible thought crossed his mind, and Gabriel immediately tried to push it away. He told himself she was probably still asleep. She was tired. She needed the rest. But when Eleah still didn't answer, his steps quickened.

He rushed to their bedroom and found her lying peacefully in bed, her angelic face calm as though she were simply enjoying a deep sleep.
